Yes I'm about to flash it any day now but I've tried holding the on button down for many seconds and the whole thing never seems to get even as far as the firmware...

But I'll give it a try. (I think I had this problem with the original Archos s/w)

Flash it, that will most likely fix it.
Reason is that my bootloader now contains code to sortof "hold" the power button.

I suspect it depends on how long you hold the "On" button.
