Subject: Successes of talkbox
From: Aman Singer (aman_at_asinger.net)
I'd just like, if I may, to post some of the new things that can now
be done with Talkbox since the introduction of spelling file names. I do so
for two reasons. First, there may be people, unlikely as it may be, who've
never done some of these things, and should be told that they're now quite
possible and even easy with Talkbox. Secondly, I'd like to show the
developers that talkbox is, in fact, making huge strides in the usability of
rockbox. That is, there are certain things I would never have done, due both
to their being somewhat risky and to the large number of blind key presses
involved, that I am doing now.
First, I said, a few days ago, that flashing for the first time
should only really be undertaken with someone who can see the screen, and
that flashing subsequently was possible. I'd now say that flashing for the
first time without the screen is possible, and flashing a second image is
easy. This is due to the ease of finding the UCL file, and the one key
activation in the plug-in that flashes the UCL file.
Secondly, loading different languages is now possible, as is ROLO
with complete certainty. Again, these names can be spelled.
Thirdly, it's now possible, after having someone set the time, to
make good stamped recordings and review them by time. This was always
possible with the PC, but is now doable with the recorder itself. I can, for
example, jump in 20 minutes in a lecture I've recorded and be sure that's
where I am by the file name.
All these features are excellent and some, like being able to spell
song titles, are not offered on the $1000 devices sold for the blind. Very
nice work indeed to the Rockboxers! And, to those talkbox users who haven't
been playing with this machine and its spelling ability much, you might well
like to have a look.
