With the old talkbox the folder names were actually spoken. The voice UI/spell directories, files is definitely not as convenient as hearing the actual labels however, this spell name/folder with Crystal or Mary of the voice UI reduces the incessant hard drive spin thus preserving battery life as well as the life expectancy of the Archos. You can bet that IDC Dragon will come up with some innovative solution that will use the Voice UI to read actual names. For now I guess it's a trade off eh? Let me know if I am off base with this. The question is, do you currently get the directory names spoken as you arrow over them? I just tried renaming my j:/music/.dirname.mp3 to J:/music.mp3 and made a copy in music j:/music/music.mp3. The music directory wasn't spoken as I arrowed over it, but the word music was spoken when I played the music.mp3 currently in the root directory of the archos. Do you have the directories talking at the moment? That is, when you hover on or enter your radio shows directory, do you hear "radio shows"? But in earlier versions of DOS, before windows, perhaps we did not need to use quotes, as file names were always 8.3 files. So needless to say, I understand about the same names in the same folder. I think what you are not understanding is that I have never used a word in my naming of files such as dirname. I interpret dirname to mean the name of the folder plus dot MP3. So wildcards should work, as I am not expecting the same names to occur, in fact I expect the names of the previous files to be kept. Also, as an example, here's what I just did and this worked: ren *.MP3 *.TBX And this renamed all of my MP3 files to TBX files of the same names, which happen to be the same as the folders in the same directory. You can certainly use the ren command with wildcards. What you can't do is have several files with the same name in the same directory. That is, let's say I had audio books.mp3 music.mp3 radio.mp3 in the same directory. I can't say ren *.mp3 .dirname.mp3 What would happen is audio books.mp3 would be renamed .dirname.mp3. When DOS went to music.mp3, it would say "can't rename, .dirname.mp3 already exists" and that would be that. I'm still confused about why you want to put periods in front of all your file names. You don't need to, in that the only file that needs a period in any folder is the .dirname.mp3 file. I have always used wildcard characters in renaming files, but just never with a dot in front. Again, I'm a bit lost on why you'd want to do this. If you use the script to generate the names, you wouldn't need to do this. In any case, though, even if the period were removed, and you tried ren *.mp3 dirname.mp3 it wouldn't work, since the file system would only rename the first mp3 file to dirname.mp3. At that point, it would see multiple dirname.mp3s and stop renaming anything.
