i`m from the "heterogenous win/unix world" :) - but i would favour using
underscores instead of dots in general.

why?

you cannot expect "untechnical average windoze users" understand why they cannot rename
a dotfile to something else and vice-versa. think of someone trying to rename .rockbox to
.rockbox.old
he will wonder and/or get confused - and i see no point why someone should potentially
stumble accross such error.
probably users use tools/scripts(vbs?) for backing up files - and these could fail with
dotfiles, too (as explorer does).

i don`t think it needs others being "educated" by us unix-guys just for the purpose
of: "hey, look how braindead windows-explorer is regarding dotfiles! we are coming from unix
and we like dotfiles. dotfiles are way cool and win32 subsystem supports them! so we use them!" :)
