Date: Sun, 18 Apr 2004 12:58:54 -0500 I really am quite happy with the TalkBox feature, but what makes it a wonderful thing for me, is that the sighted users can benefit too, and drive more safely. It is nice when the sighted altruistically make this available to the Blind, but I feel much more a part of the group when I am benefiting from something that is not just for the Blind. And similarly, as Joerg mentioned, this only proves how easy it would be for the commercial world to make everything adaptable. I cannot tell you how much the Voice UI & Talkbox has opened up the world of accessible MP3 players for the blind. I am still thinking of a way to reward their efforts. All I can say is that if causing joy in a blind persons life is a reward then their are many people on this list that are currently experiencing it. Doing great things for a segment of society that is disadvantaged is extremely could karma! I should also point out that these features are vary beneficial to sighted Rockboxers as well. Cheers and thanks to all you guys!----- Original Message ----- From: "Fred Maxwell" <rockbox_at_anti-spam.org> To: "'Rockbox development'" <rockbox_at_cool.haxx.se> Sent: Sunday, April 18, 2004 11:18 AM Subject: RE: Usefull features Pierrotsmnrd wrote: > But, I don't understand why you try to make the jukebox speak, or play > videos, whereas there are things more important to do. (so, it's just my > point of view ;)) I find the adaptation of the Archos products for blind users to be one of the most inspiring and exciting examples of how open source projects can benefit people. Even though Archos, Apple, Dell, Creative Labs, and Rio all make "jukebox" type products, none of them made the effort to adapt their product for blind users. That the Rockbox development team is doing so is a testament to the power of open source (and a condemnation of profit-is-everything businesses). With the tremendous disadvantage that blindness is, regardless of how courageously blind people cope, I won't mind of nothing ever gets done on Rockbox beyond making it more usable for them.
