I am just the opposite, I use it for ripping, and it's just okay. But I
don't use for listening, as it takes too long to load up.

Under Windows, the only reasonable choice for ripping is Exact Audio
Copy. It has robust error detection and correction, automatic CD lookup
(via freedb), file naming, track tagging, etc. It works with just about
any encoder you would want. For MP3s, use LAME. It's generally
accepted as the best.
