About the movies...it sounds like the file might be incompatible. What type of file is it(avi, mpeg, wmv...)? You might just need another codec for it to work, or the file might just plain not work with that encoding scheme. WMV and ASF files tend to do this a lot. Another thing you could try is building the graph yourself in GraphEdit. Download the program from the same place you got the RvfMux filter, and once it's running, insert the RvfMux and LAME filters then in the file menu click Render Media File.
