I don't think I have ever seen a Walkman CD player with a mute either,
because it makes more sense to either pause it, or just hit the volume down
a few times.
It probably wares less on the battery to pause it as well.

Wow! I didn't even know of it until now. Mute, in my opinion, is
unnecessary. It is good for TV's and Radios, but not for MP3 players
