Thanks Fred, a friend's going to take a look at the unit tomorrow
afternoon, I'd already invited him for dinner, so I might as well have
him singing for his supper! smile. Maybe then, I'll have more of an
idea of whether it's possible to repair it.

For jacks, you might try Digikey (www.digikey.com).
There are photos of disassembled Archos units under the "Hardware"
If you don't know the dimensions of the jack, you could use a set of
calipers to measure it.

Or, if you won't disturb others, small amplified speakers like one
computers. You could also consider an arrangement with an extension
on the headphones (1/8" male plug to 1/8" female jack - stereo)
cable is tied to the bed frame, a shelf, or some other item. Then if
fell asleep and rolled over, the headphone cable couldn't pull the
off onto the floor. Hopefully it would just unplug.
