Freaky charging problem

Hi guys.
First post here.

I've been using Rockbox (2.1) for a while and it's been working fine. Then,
I let my Recorder 15 sit idle for a couple of months. When I tried to use it
again, I started having the following problem:

When I plug in the charger, the displays says:
Charge mode:
Not charging

Batt. 4.72v -1%

After it first happened, I pulled the batteries then put them back in. It
worked for a couple of hours, and then stopped, repeating the error above.

I can get it started with the F1 start. When I do that, I see the original
Archos boot screen for a few seconds, then it jumps into Rockbox at its
resume point. It goes off a few seconds later. I can repeat this endlessly.

Today, I bought some new batteries. Duracell 2050 mAh.

When I put in the charger, I get the same "Not charging" as above.

Oops, not anymore. I'm trying this out as I write this. Now, when I plug in
the charger, I get the Rockbox splash screen immediately. A few seconds
later I get an ATA error -1.

I'm lost.

It's now 4 hours later. I left the charger back in. I'm now back to the
original behavior. I can start briefly with an F1 start - I see the Archos
Splash, then Rockbox, then I go to the resume point, "battery charging"
briefly flashes, and I'm back to
Charge mode:
Not charging

Batt. 4.72v -1%

When the charge mode message is displayed, the display fades in and out.

I almost bought a Creative Xtra the other day, but I didn't want to give up
Rockbox, so I'm determined to get this thing working.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Mario
