"english.voice" is a compilation of many mp3 clips and an index. We generate this file with scripts that: - read all spoken UI strings into wav files, using TTS - compress all these clips into mp3 - compose the required file format It depends on the TTS engine settings how this will sound. However, it's also imaginable to do some kind of post-processing to the files. And, it doesn't have to be a machine. There is one voice file which Christi, a dear user, recorded using her own voice. This page contains our collection: http://rockbox.haxx.se/twiki/bin/view/Main/VoiceFiles The older files may miss certain options which came later. > Also a second question. During playback, hold "On" like a shift key and press up/down to vary the pitch. I seem to have been wrong about it being in the menu, sorry. > I've > also heard of other interesting functions which can be found in > the menus, > but after much investigation of the menus on the F1 key, I can't seem to > find many of them. Is this because speech is not fully supported in rockbox > menus, or am I missing a patch wich grants full accessibility to the > menus? The menus should be pretty complete. > Is this the same reason that the menus launched from the F2 and f3 keys > wont speak? We have to watch the resource consumption for the voice feature. Space in the voice file is limited. The F2/F3 menus are different and difficult, there is no cursor hovering over choices, like our main menu is convenient for speaking the entries. Voice support here would mean something like first reading instructions which arrow key would do what (can be annoying) and then echoing the setting you've just altered by an arrow key. Since the F2/F3 menus are in focus for a change anyway (context sensitive menu and customizable menu), we better wait until this is done.
