Using "firmware_flash.rock" and the .bin file.
If you don't have the new bootloader, the .ucl flash plugin would tell you
in an extra screen. So if you don't get such a warning, you have the current
bootloader.

No. The bootloader now switches off the power to the HD as soon as it gets
control. The HD is on by hardware default, which is no good when your
batteries are flat. By the time Rockbox is decompressed and started
(switching it off in its init), the power drain might have brought it down
alreeady.
