Yes we could, but searching for an mp3 frame is quite a lot slower than
recognizing and skipping the APE tag.

Also, if the APE tag is in the end of the file, as the author recommends
  (and why he does that is beyond me), it is even more complicated to
strip non-mp3 data, since searching an mp3 stream backwards is pretty
tricky.
