Prefixing commands with _at_ in makefiles makes the command issued without being
echoed on screen. But yes, it seems influenced by DOS.

Not exactly. Tabs are used to start "command" lines, to make them distinctly
different than "rules" lines. At least historically, I believe GNU make and a
few others may in fact accept spaces there as well.
