Just as a suggestion, it would seem that we could reflash the Archos using the backup (<F1> copy) of the original AJR firmware by decompressing it to RAM and then reprogramming the flash with that image rather than requiring the user to use an external backup copy. Unfortunately I don't have a flashable Archos (good excuse) or time (bad excuse ;-).
