check the contrast setting.
remove rockbox and see if the original firmware has the same problem.
tap, squeeze and otherwise wiggle your jukebox about to see if it might be
a faulty connector.

Install speech and let the jukebox talk you through it :)

latest rockbox
voice pack

The lights are seperate from the display.
I believe you can buy a replacement display kit from newmp3technology.com
...if that is where you end up.
