and the 3 series of devices would have them in color, right? How would the
Rockbox handle announcing the photos? Is there a way that Rockbox could
describe the images, like Jaws can read some images?

We should be able to view pictures with either device. With the
1-series devices we would only be able to view them in black and
white, like our current devices. However, we would only be able to get
them from an external USB drive (which includes some models of cameras
and most card readers) with the 3-series devices.
