Hi rocker,

mono left plays left channel over both left and right,
mono right plays right channel over both left and right.
this in contrast to balance, which does what you describe.
at least, i think it's done this way (too lazy to read or check it out...)

Also, i noticed using the archos earphones, when turning down the volume
on the in-wire-volume control, the sound goes 'stereo narrow', and fades
slowly to mono; while volume goes down too. Not sure if it was meant this
way, and perhaps a bit offtopic in this thread.
