Hmm. Sounds bad. The charging circuit might be broken somehow.

Doesn't sound so. If you shorted + and gnd your player wouldn't start,
and the batteries would get pretty hot. :-)

Perhaps the heat from the soldering broke one of the chips near the
solder joint.
