Rockbox mail archiveSubject: newbie alert

I wanted to download the rockbox sources to try them out, here's what I
(trying to compile for iriver, simulators, X11, english)
The tarballs didn't work because of several errors - a Makefile was
missing from the ../uisimulator/common/ directory (this was kindly fixed
by a guy from #rockbox). Later on I found the Tremor and libwavpack
directories were missing from the tarball (although they were referenced
in the remaining Makefiles).
Moving on to CVS, I followed the instructions on the web and found the
uisimulator directory was missing, I had to cd into rockbox and check it
out separately... Then it would all compile. Maybe there's a better way
to do this and the web should be updated.
When running rockboxui it seemed to work - apart from it whinged about
missing .rockbox directory and 'incomplete installation'.
The guy on #rockbox said the codecs were too slow, I looked at the
apps/codecs/libmad/fixed.h and found it supported several chips but not
our 5249 :( Is anyone looking to add the 5249 MAC instructions there?
According to the mcf5xxxdspwp white paper you could get about 50%
