It is not clear from your post whether you have already tried to use
the Archos units with your new machine or just want to make sure you
don't screw something up when you DO attach them. Like the other
responses so far and your own hypothesis, I believe that XP will
recognize and run Archos products with no problem.

I recently had some problems getting a new desktop system to "see" my
JBR. This, as it turned out, was entirely my own doing - I had previous
run MS "powertoy" Tweak UI on my new system and configured the OS not
to display drive letters outside the machine's internal drives. A
rockbox sage asked if this was the case and after beating myself about
the face for a few minutes, the problem was solved.

The OS will not care what software you are running on the JB - it will
recognize the underlying component and find a driver to work with it.
The archos site has a file with updated drives available to download,
but my unit works great with the windows default driver dating back to
2001.
