My aim is to use this functionality as part of my practice routine. It does
not need to be CD quality. It's useful for capturing that cool lick you
played by accident that you would never be able to reproduce tomorrow. The
only downside is that recording to spinning disk consumes batteries quite
rapidly.

I have a no-name Digital Voice Recorder that I use now. It is small and has
good battery life. However it is cumbersome because it records into a
proprietary format and does not interact with Linux. I am going to end up
converting to mp3 anyway, so why not cut out the middle man? :)

So far moving the internal mic out seems like the best approach for my
purposes. This time I will be more careful with the solder.
