How about a simple echo "do a make in the ../tools dir first if anything
fails" inside the make or configure script? Not a very nice solution, but
it works...
And indeed, while compiling my new kernel yesterday I saw some HOSTCC
messages coming by. So it is something more widespread. Don't see the need
for different CC's while compiling linux though, but that's another thing.
