I figured out what I was doing wrong.
Someone sent a message to the list for Blind users that to upgrade the unit,
you bring up the menus, and enter on "General", and down arrow 5 times.
With my son as a reader, after I tried this several times, I found that I
had to down arrow 6 times to get to "flash firmware", or something like
that.
Then it worked!
