Guessing that it's the same as the H300 series, if you hit play, and move the switch, it'll stay in play mode and be completely unaffected by any buttons you press, even the power button. Useful if your unit is small enough to fit into a pocket and movement might otherwise hit buttons. Likewise, if you power the unit off and activate the switch, nothing will turn ON your player. True to it's name, it will 'hold' your player in whatever mode (off, idle, play, recording, radio, etc) that you're in whenever you activate the switch.
