Like Jochen wrote, it's rather the In-Reply-To header.

Let's look into RFC822 ("standard for the format of arpa internet text
messages", 1982) for the difference:

     4.6.2. IN-REPLY-TO

             The contents of this field identify previous correspon-
        dence which this message answers. [...]

     4.6.3. REFERENCES

             The contents of this field identify other correspondence
        which this message references. [...]
