Just wanna mention, as we are speaking about standards: USB extension cords (A male to A female) are also forbidden according to the USB standard. USB connections must not be longer than 5 meters, and with extension cords it's easily possible to exceed this limit. So called 'active' extension cords are a different matter, as they are basically a 1-port USB hub with an attached cable.
