What about the festival synth available on linux, it's a free opensource
synth. Its been a while but I don't think the speech was that bad. Wasn't
up to at&t, but might be better than the ms synth.

There was a good little synthetic speech utility which could talk through
the PC speaker, but I'm not sure of the name.
Maybe TineTalk?

Ah! Yes! Point taken.

In fairness, the sort of speech synth that will run on these low-specced
devices is not going to compete with a 2GB install of a professional synth
on your AMD64 for many reasons - but what it _would_ mean is that you will
never need to generate sound clips ever again.
