It's not using a PIC, it's using a Motorola Coldfire m68k-based CPU, and
a vast majority of rockbox's code is C, not assembly.
The assembly is mostly restricted to the hardware drivers, and bootup
code for the most part (although some codecs use optimised mathematical
routines in order to run at >100% realtime, etc, but those are well
commented and usually fairly critical)

The input ADC gives the unit a raw PCM stream afaik, i don't know what
the limitations on input rates are however.
