I've done that and now its trying to play the file and manages 2 seconds or
so and then you get a big burst of static noise in the cans and then it
tries to play again -- goodness knows what's happening. Should I try
rerunning the firmware upgrade thing again? And if so could you remind me
how I do that. In other wors, which menu is the firmware upgrade option
located.

That's usually a symptom of codecs from a different build of Rockbox hanging
around. The easiest way to fix is to delete your .rockbox directory and
re-install Rockbox. (Although a simple re-install making sure to copy all
the files including those in .rockbox might be sufficient.)
