We need to get Rockbox running on the units, and different models require
different actions.

Yes.

The ones with larger (60GB - 2 platter) disks are thicker, and so is the X5L
models that come with a bigger battery. I don't think there is any X5L with a
2 platter disk.

Rockbox currently runs on iAudio X5, X5L and X5V.
