Hi Stuart,
Try this, as I think setting your unit to the defaults may help you out.
This is how it is on my iRiver, but I think the menus are the same for this.
Open the menus.
press the menu down arrow 3 times and press Play
down arrow twice and press the Play button
you may need to press the Play button once more to confirm.
then just left arrow out of the menus.

    Hey Rocker,

I'm sorry but this simply doesn't work on my player.

I unzip the file, replace the 'Rockbox' Folder and the ajbrec file and then
download the latest 'MS Mary' voice from the website, install it into the
langs directory, replacing my older voice file, turn on the unit and no
speech.

It does however play files audio files.

Now my question. If rockbox wasn't working at all, would it play files, or
would the old Archos firmware kick in again?
