Hi Rob,
Regarding USB, my recommendation is not to try to plug in the USB cable
while the unit is off. The Rockbox bootloader seems to have some issues
that cause bootloader USB mode to fail with some systems intermittantly.
Also, under certain conditions, USB will fail with resume on start up
enabled. See the SoftwareCodecPlayback wiki page for more info, but
generally, I'd advise just disabling resume on start up for now. USB
also sometimes fails if you attempt to connect to USB while playback is
in progress.
To summarise all of this, USB should always work just fine if you have
resume on start up disabled, have booted Rockbox and have stopped
playback. Note that this is not intended behaviour, but this is how
things are until these bugs are tracked down and fixed.
