Hi Rob,
Converting from one lossy compression format to another is called
transcoding and causes exponential loss in quality. It's rather like
copying analog tapes over and over again; you copy something with a bit
of quality loss, there is more quality loss, and on it goes. If you can
re-rip from the original source, it is generally a much better idea,
although that's obviously sometimes not an option.
