Hi Linus

I was doing that. I probably confused the issue by saying I pressed the
play/pause button, but I've tried a long press of that button, and still no
joy.

AFAIK, the current implementation of the voice playback on X5 (actually
on all target with software codecs) can not play voice when the playback
is paused. You need to stop the playback completely, by holding the
Play/Pause button until the music stops.
