Hi Anna, thanks for that.

I've got loads of audible content that I'd like to load, however I'd
assumed that I wouldn't be able to use it, as the ipod wouldn't speak
in apple boot up mode.

Thanks for the other answers anyway, certainly I'll try the charging
one, and booting the ipod in apple firmware.
