It probably wouldn't work very well - text to speech (and the other way
around) is quite primitive under Linux at the moment.

No. When you plug in an iPod, the Rockbox firmware reboots into the
Apple firmware, putting it into the Apple firmware's mass storage device
mode. In theory, the Rockbox firmware should be able to do the USB stuff
itself.

I'm finding it especially annoying because, on some machines, after
disconnecting from USB, the iPod likes to reset the Rockbox configuration.
