Melissa,

A small correction to what Rocker wrote. The presence of the .rockbox
directory on your player hard disk does not mean that your player has
been flashed with the Rockbox bootloader. This only means that the
Rockbox firmware is installed on the hard disk. To get up and running,
the firmware needs the Rockbox bootloader to be flashed into the players
non-volatile memory (its Flash RAM). From what you said and the fact
that your mother did not see the Rockbox logo when the player turns on
means that even though you did a firmware update, the update did not
contain the Rockbox bootloader. Therefore, if you haven't already, you
need to download the fwpatch.exe file from the Rockbox site and use it
to patch the .hex file of the Iriver firmware you wish to update to.

By the way, when you do run fwpatch.exe, you should be aware that
keyboard support in it does not work properly. In order to successfully
patch the Iriver firmware, you need to click the Browse button with the
mouse or using your screen reader's mouse emulation commands. After
selecting the firmware file, you then need to click on the Patch button.

The installation instructions can be found at
http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/ManualRockboxInstall
just look for the Iriver installation heading and check that you have
downloaded an international version of the Iriver firmware, not a US
version. The US firmware cannot be patched. Also, take note of the
warning about losing DRM capability if you update a US player to a
non-US version of the Iriver firmware.

Let us know how it goes. Good luck!

Hth,
Andrew.

 From what you said earlier,
