Absolutely. Rockbox should not say a word (or make a noise) if resume on
startup is on. The point of a "ready" message is to make Rockbox make
the user aware that it's ready. Playing music is of course better at
that than any message.

And the current patch doesn't do anything if resume on startup is on,
either.

And here again, the idea is indeed to provide feedback that Rockbox is
shutting down, and you can stop holding the button now to avoid
confusion (did I shut down or not?). I assume that the added feedback
was why you liked the menu option.

To me it sounds like there's support all around for both startup and
shutdown notices.

I think customizable sounds should be handled separately. If someone
wants to whip up a patch, look at FS#6097, and I imagine it should be
fairly easy from there (check for mp3 file, "talk" it if it exists).
