The line-in port supplies 2.5 volts to a powered microphone, so you won't
have as much headroom as you would with a dedicated preamplifier which
traditionally supplies 9 volts.

Really? How much "plug-in power" is provided via the line in port? I
believe I detected a noticeable difference between using a battery box or
not using one.
