I'm using an older version of Rockbox (circa end of August), with a few
custom patches, though none of them should be affecting tag cache at all. I
find, whenever I add new music to the HD, I have to completely re-initialize
the tag cache -- even though it's set to update automatically, as per the
documents -- then reboot. Until then, whenever I try to load the music
database, I'm told that tag cache isn't ready.

Something you may want to play with is whether or not you load it to RAM.
ISTR having better success with auto-updates when that wasn't the case, but I
could be mistaken.
