You could try using the recently added voicebuilding functionality of
the Rockbox build system. Follow the instructions on
http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/VoiceBuilding#Using_Linux

You need to have Lame and one of either Festival, flite or eSpeak
installed. This should work on Mac OS X. It's probably not as high
quality as the commercial TTS engines, but there's no legal unpleasantness.
