The display appears quite bright, compared to one I have looked at which someone else owns, but since I cannot read anything on the screen, that is, I can see it poorly, I should not trust my judgement of the brightness to determine which unit I have. Support for the 30GB "5.5G" is very close (i.e. a few days at the most) to becoming official. I'm just working on finalising a new set of install procedures (based on a new, all-powerful version of ipodpatcher) and building/testing the necessary binaries. This will then make identifying a compatible video ipod simple - if it's 30GB or 60GB, then it will work with Rockbox, if it's 80GB it won't (at the moment). Also, the support for the 5.5G will be fully automatic. i.e. users won't need to know if they've got a 5G or 5.5G video ipod before installing - exactly the same version of Rockbox and the same install procedures will work on both.
