It raises the CPU usage pretty drastically for all codecs. For example, for each band in the software EQ you disable (set to 0 dB gain), the CPU gets a bit less to do, so if you can use the HW EQ shelving filters and disable the software EQ ones, you'll win a bit more CPU power back.
