Ah, ok.
Have you made sure to have the english.voice file copied to
/.rockbox/langs and selected "english" as language? If you chose
something different you'll of course need to have a matching voice
file, and AFAIK there is no current voice file available other than
english. But as I don't use voice I may be wrong ...
Speaking the menus is enabled per default, to make sure you didn't
turn it off by accident you can reset your settings while booting.
Press Rec while booting (but after powering on) will reset you
settings.

I don't understand this. If you installed the Rockbox bootloader you
don't need to upgrade the iriver firmware. To upgrade Rockbox just
unzip the rockbox.zip file from the website to the root folder of your
player, no flashing required. You'll need the iriver upgrade procedure
(i.e. flashing the player) only if the bootloader gets updated (which
happens rarely -- for myself, I haven't updated my bootloader since a
year or so) and usually an updated bootloader is compatible so you are
not required to update the bootloader. It may of couse happen to break
compability but this hasn't happened for h300 as far as I remember.
