Mike,

How about checking that the language is set to English? And, even if it
is set to English, try changing it to another language (preferly
something you and your sighted assistance can muddle through like
Spanish or French maybe), exiting the menus and then going back in and
setting the language back to English.

Also, is the .voice file you are using a recent one and is the firmware
also recent?
