What input do you have selected? Note that the "mic"
selection on the H340 in the recording settings refers to
the internal mic. If you are using an external mic, you
need to make sure that the input source is set to "line in."

Which Sony mic are you using? I've used a Sony ECM-MS907
many times with good results, without using a separate preamp.
