I traced the code changes back to the beginning of the iPod porting, but
I couldn't find any evidence that Play has ever been used to select a
file in the browser.

I can imagine it is easy to think it worked, for example if you tried to
select the same file you played the last time. Then the difference would
be that it started playing in the middle of the file and not at the
beginning, leading you to believe that Play could be used to play a file
from the browser, while all it did was resume the last played file.
