You should do a read/write test on the whole disc (not just its first
partition). I'm afraid you cannot do this in DOS (or whatever the OS is
called nowadays). "badblocks -w /dev/your-iriver" would do this in GNU/Linux.
The device does not support SMART so you don't need to take that into account.
