There's still lots of issues with the speex codec in Rockbox. For one,
it doesn't play stereo Speex files, and if you try, you get the symptoms
you described. There's probably other issues as well.

The Speex codec in Rockbox can only play Speex files that are in Ogg
containers. It should support Speex in either .ogg files or Ogg streams
that are renamed to .spx.
